This month's TV Club is curated by Susannah Magers who has watched a lot of Charmed in addition to being one of the Co-Directors at Royal NoneSuch. Created by melodrama behemoth Spelling Entertainment (of 90210 and Melrose Place fame) the popular series Charmed (1998-2006) centered on three sisters: Prue (played by Shannen Doherty), Piper (played by Holly Marie Combs) and Phoebe (played by Alyssa Milano) who inherit a sprawling Victorian mansion in San Francisco that contains a book of spells—and the secrets that reveal their destiny as good witches imbued with powers (astral projection, telepathy and the power to freeze time).

During TV Club, we’ll discuss how the show incorporates (and departs from) many of the expected Spelling Entertainment production tropes; its site-specificity in San Francisco; the invocation of demonology, spirituality and Wiccan lore; and how the sisters’ characters subvert the passive female character role—neither solely victims nor love interests/eye candy, but empowered, critically-thinking and multidimensional women.

Charmed-evocative nineties attire (cropped anything, baby tees, chunky heeled platforms, floral jumpers, and chokers) strongly encouraged!
